Building care that reaches further.
Expanding healthcare access to underserved communities in Ethiopia — one family, one village, one life at a time.
THE DISPARITY GAP
Access to quality healthcare remains one of the most profound inequalities of our time. In Ethiopia, a child born in a rural village faces a life expectancy more than 20 years shorter than a child born in the United States. Preventable diseases, limited access to clean water, and a shortage of trained medical professionals claim thousands of lives every year — not because the solutions don’t exist, but because they haven’t yet reached the people who need them most.
The Assefa Foundation exists to change that. By connecting resources, education, and healthcare access to underserved communities in Ethiopia, we work to close the gap — one family, one village, one life at a time.
HOW WE GOT STARTED
The Assefa Foundation was born from a journey, and a question that I couldn’t let go: why does where you are born determine whether you are blind or have perfect vision, even whether you live or die?"
After years working in healthcare in the U.S., we saw firsthand the resources available here — the specialists, the technology, the systems — and couldn’t stop thinking about the people back home who had none of it. He later founded The Assefa Foundation with a simple but powerful conviction: access to care is a human right, not a privilege of geography.
Assefa — meaning “he has expanded” in Amharic — reflects our belief that opportunity, health, and hope can and must be expanded to reach those who have been left behind.
